We are still in Skagway for the 4th day, this is such a neat place between the history and the railroad running across the street from the RV. It switches the trains out here and takes them down about a quarter of mile or so and picks up the passengers right off the cruise ships and takes them on their $200 train trip. What a racket, they took 6 trains of passenger up the trail yesterday and back in 2 hours. 3 of the trains were with steam engine and the rest with diesel.
People are fiercely protective of the cruise ships business here, it is their lifeblood and the town is geared around it. There are probably 10 jewelry stores, many of them the same ones you see in the carribean on that cruise. They have the natural resources, lakes and trails and beautiful water. The Lynn canal that comes up into the town off the ocean is the deepest fjord on earth at about 3,000 feet deep.
Mom and I went to a one hour play at the local Eagles club which has been playing for 85 years called the days of 89, a takeoff on the goldrush times and the crook who ran the syndicate here names "Soapy" Smith. It was good, the players in it are students or locals who have come for the summer season. Very talented
We then came back to the motorhome for lunch, a good turkey sandwich and a bowl of Wonton soup from Costco. Mom had a tuna. I then talked Mom into taking a hike with me, the flyer said it was "moderate", this hike was straight up the first half mile and I thought Jan was going to give up but she came through like a champ. When we finally got up the mountain we found the lake but the trail was muddy in spots and we got through some of them but finally gave up because there were way too many trees across the trail but it was a nice 2 mile hike.
We came back to the motorhome and I cleaned up the windshield getting ready for departure on Wednesday, tomorrow we take a full day catamaran boat ride to Juneau and wildlife viewing, we are looking forward to it.
