8:29 - We left the Moab RV Park to drive to Salt Lake City. The AC is not working and it was a little warm in here last night. Now, instead of going to Dinosaur Park we are going to Salt Lake for the cooler weather and to find a Winnebago dealer to get it fixed. There is not much traffic on the highway even on rt #70 west. We passed a sign that said-Last services for next 106 miles! I think we are in the middle of nowhere!
The Union Pacific Railroad runs alongside the highway. They're replacing the railroad ties and adding new ballast. We saw the highway rail trucks and the cranes lifting the ties. There are some pretty tough grades to drive up these mountains, especially for those trains. There are also quite a few tunnels cut through the mountains. We can see the snow on top of the mountains again; and that means cooler weather. There are quite a bit of switchbacks to get up to 6000 and 7000 feet again. We even passed a Cracker Barrel which we haven't seen since St. Louis.
This was a nice drive today with no traffic and nice weather. The first thing we did when we arrived in Salt Lake City was find a Costco to buy water, blueberries and yogurt. The last one we saw was in St. Louis. The RV Park is called the "Pony Express" and it is really nice with concrete pads even for the car.
In downtown Salt Lake City is the Temple Square with the Mormon Temple and all of their churches and administration buildings., They are really awesome, especially when you consider they were built in the 1860's. Most of them are granite and marble from the nearby mountains. Their gardens are in full bloom and perfectly manicured. The hyacinths and tulips smelled wonderful. Inside they have gorgeaous paintings of the different stages of Jesus' life and death. In another section there were paintings from the Old Testament. They had a museum depicting how hard it was to build the temple and the handmade tools they used. Then we watched a movie on the life of Joseph Smith and how he started the Mormon religion. It was really enlightening.
Salt Lake City has a really nice highway system. The roads are in great shape and the city is laid out in a grid pattern; so it's easy to follow. And the new Magellan we bought at Costco is invaluable, especially to find movie theatres and restaurants.
Tomorrow we will stay here and try to see where we can get the Rv's AC fixed.
