Mesa Verde National park is the home of the "cave cities" of the early Indians in the Southwest. They lived on these cliffs which is some of the most arrable and productive land in this area as there is a ready source of water for the agriculture. The "Spruce Tree House" was found in the 19th century, it was named Spruce by the founders, two cowboys, even though there are no spruce trees in this area.
